Cemetary Celebrations

All Soul’s Day or “Araw ng mga Patay”, held on November 2, is a call to gather in Philippines. Though solemn in nature, Filipinos make commemorating the dead an event. People flock to the graveyards, the most notable of which in the capital is the Manila Memorial Park. Braving the traffic, Roman Catholic Pinoys come together with friends and families to remember their dearly departed. The massive crowds, glow of candlelights and food tents, makes the cemetary resemble a festival. Turning grief into joyful remembrance, people congregate to their respective grave sites or family mausoleums to eat, pray and show their respects. The nights and early mornings are filled by the guitar stylings of the musically inclined, the chatter of family gossip and the laughter of children playing hide-and-seek amongst the graves.
